ABOUT OEUF

PHILOSOPHY

What is Oeuf?
Oeuf (pronounced UH-F), is a New York-based design company founded in 2002 by French/American couple, Sophie Demenge and Michael Ryan. Known for their modern take on nursery furniture, they have been pioneers of fair trade and eco friendly products long before it was fashionable to do so. From their furniture line produced in Europe to their knits produced by a group of female knitters in Bolivia, they've made it their mission to ensure environmentally sound products starting with the choice of materials to the manufacturing processes to the selection of recycled packaging.

Why “be good”?
When we were kids, whenever our parents dropped us off somewhere like school, our grandparents' house for the weekend or even summer camp, they always gave us a hug and a kiss and told us to "be good" as they waved goodbye.

As kids, we're very literal and knew this meant…don't cut your sister's hair; don't glue yourself to the wall; don't go running off into the woods with nothing but your underwear and a toothbrush. At the time, it was mostly about good behavior.

Now as parents, we realize there is a whole other level of meaning when we kiss them goodbye and tell them to be good. We know we're really telling them to be good people. Do the right thing. Make us proud. Be the kind of people we hope to be. At Oeuf, we have the chance to elevate this notion once again and be a good company. When we say Be Good, we mean:

Be good designers.
Simple, clean, intuitive products that are easy and safe to use; made with quality craftsmanship that will last from generation to generation; designed with a European sensibility that is fun and stylish, reflecting the needs and lifestyle of today's modern families.

Be good people.
Respect the people who work with us and treat them fairly whether employees, artisans, retailers, or consumers. Provide a safe and supportive working environment that allows working families to live and thrive in the United States, Europe and abroad. Honor cultural traditions, diversity and local values. Pay people living wages that enable them to live healthy, fulfilling lives and send their own children to school.

Be good to the planet.
Use natural, renewable, recyclable materials that emphasize conservation and lead to environmentally sound products. Employ eco-conscious manufacturing processes that promote low emissions and sustainability.

Be Good is not just something we say—it's something we mean. As parents, we want our children to inherit a world that is better than we found it. As Oeuf, we have the ability to make that happen.

How do you pronounce “Oeuf”?
Oeuf is pronounced UH-F.

Where did the name “Oeuf” come from?
Oeuf means "egg" in French. We chose Oeuf because like an egg, our design is simple and clean and our components are natural and lasting.

ABOUT FURNITURE

HEALTH & SAFETY

Do Oeuf products meet US safety standards?
Our furniture meets and/or exceeds all US, European, Canadian, and Australian safety standards.

Is it safe to leave the Changing Station on the crib while my child is in the crib?
Yes. The Oeuf Changing Station securely attaches to the crib to prevent it from falling and injuring your child.

Do I have to anchor my dresser to the wall?
Yes, it is very important that you anchor your dresser to the wall as recommended by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. If you have a hutch, the hutch should be anchored as well.

Does your furniture use any glue?
Not all of our pieces use wood glue; however, when we do use glue it is non-toxic and water-based (think Elmer’s).

What are the VOC emission levels on your furniture?
Recent attention has focused on the amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted into the air in our homes. Typically, the VOC of most concern is formaldehyde. Our products meet the toughest European (E1) and Californian emissions standards (CARB 1 and 2) for formaldehyde emissions. The CARB 2 standards will be adopted federally in 2013, but we are meeting them now.

Is there formaldehyde in your wood?
Because wood naturally contains formaldehyde, no wood product is formaldehyde free. Our products meet the toughest European (E1) and Californian standards (CARB 1 and 2) for formaldehyde emissions.

FINISHES

What finishes are available?
We offer birch, walnut stain, white, grey, and espresso finishes.

What kind of stains and paints do you use?
The finishes we use on our furniture are free of VOC health hazards, non-toxic and water-based. We meet all European, US, Canadian and Australian standards for safety and emissions, and our finishes are also approved in Europe for use on children’s toys.

Will the colors from one collection match the colors from another collection?
All of the finishes match between collections. For example, a white Classic Dresser will match a white Sparrow Crib. Please note, though, that since the birch and walnut finishes show the natural grain of the wood, there may be uneveness in the color, and the finishes may not be identical from piece to piece.

Are espresso and walnut the same color?
No, the espresso and walnut finishes are not the same color and do not match. The espresso finish is darker than the walnut.
